Approaching historic buildings is like confronting one’s own past, because the past stretches out its faithful arms and waits.

It has been experienced. It is real.

Its existence has been accepted and defined, and taken its place in history.

It is assumed that what belongs to the past, what has been lived deserves affection and presents no dangers. Its boundaries are certain, whether beneficial or harmful. (…)
